Game: Space Invaders

GavinMaxwellGavinMaxwell Posts: 229Member Pebbler
OK, it's ready for it's public debut!

SPACE INVADERS

There's still some polish to add, but it plays and works pretty well. I'm looking at if I can modify the controls dynamically to enable you to specify which button for fire (default currently is the centre 'select' button).

Looking forward to hearing the feedback on this one!

Cheers,
Gavin.

This is awesome, thanks! I was going to post about the scoring issue but that was sorted out already. I have to say I did like it when my score became an invader head at about 1800.

Have you tried the Pebloid update? The remapped buttons are ace, hope you could implement something similar with all your games.

Haven't played it but I do have an Invaders version working as I mentioned in the original thread - ie first button press sets the fire button. Needs more work though.

Almost 1000 downloads overnight, but very few comments here, and none on mypebblefaces.

What do people think needs work? I'm going to complete the button configuration, but interested in hearing more feedback.

Also if you like it please give it a thumbs up on mypebblefaces. :-)

Well, my main question is are you done? If that's the case would you consider this more of a "inspired by space invaders" game? The reason I ask that is because the aliens don't progress downwards.

Additionally, the alien's shots in the arcade space invaders look more like vertical versions of the enemy shots in scramble. Was that a design choice? On that note, if memory serves me correct, you could also shoot enemy projectiles.

Lastly, where's the spaceship? Any plans on implementing it?

    All good points.

    No I'm not done :)
Downward progress is clearly needed, and shouldn't be very hard.
The invaders bullets were really hard to see as thin vertical lines, so I made them larger simply to make them easier to see and avoid. I can put it back to how it was but it will be much harder.
Haven't looked at shooting invader shots, but should be possible.
I have a mystery ship ready to fly. :)

    Thanks!

I'd prefer it the other way up then you can play it whilst wearing it.

I've uploaded v0.3 which provides a number of updates, including those from @dezign999:
    - performance improvements
    - downward progression of invaders. when they reach your bunkers it's game over man!
    - ability to shoot invader bombs
    - mystery ship!
    - configurable buttons - on the splash screen press the button you want to use for the fire button twice. the remaining 2 buttons will be automatically configured for left/right movement.

And this has been produced using the Watchface SDK...... What will be produced when the full SDK is released! Good job.

    Well done!

Only note I have is that the screen was garbled on first run.  I thought the watch crashed..  A center button push got me to the start screen.  It worked OK after that.

You'll be able to use the accelerometer. I'm looking forward a Pebble version of Aerox. :)

Wow you turned this around so quickly! Amazing...

I'm really enjoying the new control scheme very much, as well as the new additions. Have you considered increasing the pixel amount the invaders drop the farther you progress in the game? For example at 2000 pts instead of dropping 1 pixel at a time, they drop 2, and so on. The idea is that this would go from a game that tests how long you can maintain your attention span, like Fire for example, to how long can you survive as the difficulty progressively increases. High scores at that point are a real testament to a player's adept ability to stay alive and progress.

Great work, I wish the pebble did sound, I can hear the saucer's sound effect in my head whenever it appears, lol!

Oh, any intention of introducing this control scheme into fire/parachute?

I'm already tracking levels, so increasing downward progression would be simple - consider it done. I'll definitely be adding the configurable control scheme into my other games - once I sat down it only took about 5 minutes to get it going!

Sound would awesome right?! Just a little piezo would be enough to make gaming so much more fun! I also hear all those retro effects in my head... along with the sound of pinball machines in the background and "Computer Games" blasting overhead...

So I'm working on v0.4. So far it has

    1. Increase in downward (and sidewards) progression as levels increase
    2. Better game over experience.
    3. Minor tweaks including revised splash screen showing mystery ship

Anything else begging to be done?

    Cheers,
    Gavin.

@Gavin Maxwell - absolutely fantastic work. I came a little late to the party on this one, but, from what I can see you've done a marvelous job and each revision just pushes & demonstrates the pebble capability another step further. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and I'd hope that @eric uses & credits your games to showcase pebble's potential :)

    All the best,

Thanks! I was hoping the latest update from Eric et al on Kickstarter might reference it after they tweeted about it last week, but they went for the awesome Pebloid instead, which is another game pushing the platform. Maybe they were concerned about potential trademark BS... which is understandable.

OK guys, v0.4 is now available.

    0.4
    - improved game over experience
    - horizontal progression of invaders increases as their numbers decrease
    - updated splash screen to include mystery ship
    - your laser impacts the top of the screen just like the real game

    Cheers,
    Gavin.

Great work.  I may try to take a crack at Asteriods if I ever get a watch that is. :)

    Thanks Ted.

There's already a game called Pebloids which is a basic Asteroids clone. I've got some old code for a proper Asteroids as well that I could port over, but it's a more complex game than Space Invaders. However seeing how well Pebble handles SI it's quite possibly up to Asteroids as well!

Ah looks like Pebloids is an Arkanoid clone rather than an Asteroids clone. :)

    Hi!

Great app - thank you a lot for it! I loved it, but cannot use it anymore, because I needed to upgrade my pebble to 2.0. :(

Would it be possible for you, to compile it with SDK2.0?

Thanx and keep up the great work!
